The Mount Rothwell Conservation and Research Centre (Mt Rothwell) is a privately owned 420 ha property located 45 km west of Melbourne in Litte River. It is the largest predator free ecosystem in Victoria, with the goal of creating an area similar to what it would be before Europeans arrived. They do this by erecting fences covering the entire of the property from predator animals such as wild cats, foxes and snakes. They also conuct research here, here's a snip it from their website:
Mt Rothwell is a conservation and research centre with 453 hectares maintained as a predator free ecosystem, the largest in Victoria. It’s here that management and research is carried out in consultation with a number of government wildlife agencies and research organisations including the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE), Zoos Victoria, Monash University and the University of Melbourne.
This organisation is responsible for the help of conserving animals such as the Eastern Barred Bandicoot, Red Bellied Pademelon and Eastern Quoll.

In 2013, the Eastern Barred Bandicoot was declared extinct on the Australian mainland but thanks to the hard work and dedication of organisations such as Mt Rothwell, they were finally able to release a small population of within the wild, Hamilton in Victoria. This shows just how important it is to acknowledge and support the efforts shown by Mt Rothwell to ensuring the little guys are able to survive long in to the future.
For an experience you will never forget we recommend that you go visit Mt Rothwell, in order to experience and see the work being undertaken. Make a booking and you will enjoy an afternoon BBQ followed by a evening tour of the conservation. Tours take place on the last Saturday of each month, unless a minimum of 10 people at once make one booking then you can come here during any night of the year. $35 for adults and $25 for kids under 17, children under 5 can come for free! If you are involved with an environmental group then discounts are available. All proceeds go to ensuring this place last long in to the future. With the work they are doing and the experience on offer this truly is a win-win situation for everyone involved. So the question now is: What are you waiting for!?
