The Mountain Pygmy Possum is critically endangered, and it is found only in Alpine regions of Australia in Victoria and NSW. These little cute creatures only have a current population of less than 1500!
Healesville Sanctuary currently holds a breeding population of 45 Mountain Pygmy-Possums, and have successfully bred young from 2008 to 2011. These efforts are just what these guys need if they are to have a chance of surviving. Due to the successful breeding programs in existence, Zoos Victoria was able to actually release a small population back out in to the wild in 2013! These little guys can live a long life of up to 12 years, if their able.
Now if we can get those European Red Foxes and Wild Cats under control these guys will have a chance to breed out in the wild where they should be.
