Up close and personal with a Mahogany Glider

Only approximately 1500 of these majestic guys are left and they are therefore endangered. It is the only endangered glider species listed in Queensland. According to the Queensland Government Mahogany gliders are restricted to the coastal southern Wet Tropics region of northern Queensland. They live in a narrow and highly fragmented band of lowland sclerophyll forest extending around 140 km from Toomulla, north of Townsville, to Tully and up to 40 km inland. Unfortunately, they are an isolated animal and this as well as habitat destruction is causing their demise. Predators such as cats, Rufous Owl and the Masked Owl are also putting them at risk. Man-made risks are barbed wire fencing and road kill.

Luckily the Australian government have created a recovery plan for these small creatures. Lets hope it's just in time. You can view the recovery plan by here.

In a glide!

They have been known to glide up to 60 metres with an average glide distance of 30 metres.
