The Northern hairy-nosed wombat (yes that really is their name!) is mainly located in the Epping Forest National Park in central

Northern hairy-nosed wombat

Queensland with a second population developing in Richard Underwood Nature Refuge near St Geroge in southern Queensland.

This species of wombat is the largest of the three wombat species and averages a whopping 32kgs and more than one meter in length. They are generally nocturnal but will sun themselves on winter mornings and afternoons. They live in sandy soil close to trees where they can dig their homely little burrows.

The main to these animals used was food shortage due to overgrazing by livestock. Now, the effects of drought and predators such as dingoes have also contributed to the species demise.

THESE WOMBATS NEED OUR HELP. These are several ways to get involved to help these guys. One way is to get an organisation or school to get involved in the Hairy-Nosed Day which is held every year on May 11th. People at schools and organisations across Australia and the world wear whiskers to raise awareness for the Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat.

Something to think about before you leave this post..... "At one time, there were only 35 Northern hairy-nosed wombats left on the planet." Guys if we can all skip that fast food meal this week and donate we can make a difference to these poor animals.
